The Empanada Sonata is a family-owned Puerto Rican and Cuban fusion concept founded in 2015 by husband-and-wife team Keith and Marlyse Moran in Brooklyn, New York. Built on generations of family recipes, handcrafted food, and a passion for bringing people together, the concept combines authentic Caribbean flavors with creative twists.
Marlyse’s love for cooking began at four years old, learning beside her family in the kitchen. Inspired by Puerto Rican and Cuban recipes passed down through generations, she has spent a lifetime refining those flavors while adding her own creative point of view.
Keith Moran is a retired New York City firefighter who served with the FDNY, including during the aftermath of September 11, 2001. His dedication to service, resilience, and community continues to shape the values of the business.
After relocating to Middle Tennessee in 2019, the family introduced The Empanada Sonata to a new community through pop-ups, catering, private events, and takeout experiences. When the original brick-and-mortar location closed during the COVID-19 pandemic, the brand continued through community events and specialty food offerings.
Today, The Empanada Sonata is the story of family, heritage, and resilience. Rooted in faith, perseverance, and a passion for serving others, Marlyse’s vision is to create food that feels welcoming, generous, and connected to community.
